What Is My Tarot Birth Card?

Add up your date of birth with tarot's classic numerology method and find out which major arcana is your birth card, with a full worked example.

The method: how your card is worked out

The calculation adds the day, the month and the year of your birth date as full numbers. For 5 March 2001, for example: 5 + 3 + 2001 = 2009.

Then you add the digits of that total, repeating the process while the result is greater than 22, until you reach a number of two digits at most. Following the example: 2 + 0 + 0 + 9 = 11. Since 11 is below 22, that is where it stops: your main card is XI, Justice.

If that first sum comes to exactly 22, your card is The Fool, numbered 0 in the deck: 22 and 0 are, in tarot, the same energy closing and opening the cycle.

  • Add day + month + year.
  • Add the digits of the result.
  • Repeat while the number is above 22.
  • If it lands on 22, your card is The Fool (0).

When your main card is 10 or higher

If your main card is a two-digit number, 10 to 21, you also get a second card: add those two digits together. Take 11, for example: 1 + 1 = 2, so your pair is XI, Justice, and II, The High Priestess.

The number 19 is a special case because it produces three cards in a row: 19 reduces to 1 + 9 = 10, and 10 reduces again to 1 + 0 = 1. Someone with main card 19 also carries X, Wheel of Fortune, and I, The Magician, as supporting cards.

A note on the numbering

In the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, the one this calculator uses, Strength is card VIII and Justice is XI. In other traditional decks, such as the Marseille tarot, those two numbers are swapped.

That difference matters for the maths: if your date adds up to 8, your card is Strength; if it adds up to 11, it is Justice, always following Rider-Waite-Smith order.

What your birth card means

Your birth card does not predict what will happen to you. It is a symbolic way of naming an underlying theme that tends to follow you: a lesson, a strength or a tension you recognise when you look at your life with some distance.

If you get two or three cards, they are not in competition. Read them together, as layers of the same personal story.

Frequently asked questions

What if my total already comes to 22 or less straight away?

Then that number is your main card directly, with no further reducing needed. If your date adds up to 15, for instance, your card is XV, The Devil, with no extra steps.

What if the result is exactly 22?

22 has no arcana of its own in the classic numbering, so it is treated as 0: The Fool. It is a special case that closes the full cycle of the major arcana.

Does the second card replace the main one?

No, it sits alongside it. The main card marks the central theme; the second one, and third, as with 19, adds a nuance worth reading together with the first rather than instead of it. None of the cards cancel each other out.

Does this calculator work for any date of birth?

Yes, the method adds the day, month and year exactly as they appear in your date, so it works the same regardless of the year you were born. You only need your full date of birth to get a result.
