Life Path Number Calculator
Find your life path number for free, what we at Velotit also call your destiny number: the base figure of your numerology chart, worked out from your full date of birth.
What the life path number is
The life path number, also called the destiny number, is the most commonly cited figure in a numerology study: it sums up the underlying energy you're born with, based on the full day, month and year of your birth.
It never changes, unlike your personal year, which is recalculated every year. In the Pythagorean tradition this calculator follows, it's the first figure looked at before the rest of the study.
How it's calculated, step by step
The formula reduces the year, the month and the day separately, adding up their digits until one remains, unless the result is 11, 22 or 33 (master numbers, which aren't reduced further). The three results are then added together and reduced once more with the same rule.
Each part is reduced on its own, rather than the whole date at once, because that's how a hidden master number in a month or a day survives instead of getting lost in the overall sum. Here's an example: you were born on 5 March 2001.
| Part of the date | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Year (2001) | 2+0+0+1 = 3 | 3 |
| Month (March = 3) | reduce(3) | 3 |
| Day (5) | reduce(5) | 5 |
| Total | 3 + 3 + 5 | 11 |
| Life path number | 11 (master number, not reduced) | 11 |
The master numbers: 11, 22 and 33
When the sum of year, month and day lands exactly on 11, 22 or 33 at any step of the reduction, that number is kept as it is: it isn't added down any further to a single digit.
In numerology they're read as intensified versions of their simple reductions (11 from 2, 22 from 4, 33 from 6), with more potential and also more demands. Not everyone has one: they're less common than the numbers 1 to 9.
How it differs from the other numbers in a full study
The life path number is one of five core numbers in a complete numerology study. The other four are different: the soul urge number comes from the vowels in your name, the personality number from the consonants, and the expression number from your full name, while the personal year is recalculated every year against the current date.
Each one describes a different layer; the life path is the only one worked out from your date of birth alone, without using your name. The full reading crosses all five to write one combined interpretation for you.
What it tells you, and what it doesn't
It reads as an underlying tendency, not a closed destiny or a guarantee of success or failure. It's a symbolic tool within a numerology tradition with centuries of history, useful for reflection rather than for predicting with certainty what will happen to you. Two people with the same life path number can live completely different lives.
Frequently asked questions
Why is it called a life path number and also a destiny number?
They're two names for the same figure, depending on the school or the translation used. It's most widely known in English as the life path number; at Velotit we also call it the destiny number.
Why is each part of the date reduced separately instead of all at once?
Because reducing the year, month and day separately catches master numbers hidden in each part, which would be lost if you added up every digit of the date in one go. It's the standard formula in Pythagorean numerology, and the one this calculator uses.
Can the life path number change over time?
No. Unlike your personal year, the life path number is worked out once from your full date of birth and never changes, whatever your age.
What else does a full numerology study include?
Besides the life path number, it includes the soul urge, personality and expression numbers, drawn from your name, plus the personal year, which is recalculated annually. The full reading crosses all five.
Is a life path 11 the same as a life path 2?
Not exactly. 11 is a master number: in numerology it's read as a more intense version of 2, with more sensitivity and also more demands, and it isn't reduced to 2 in the calculation.
