Solar Return Calculator
We give you the exact date and time your Sun returns to its natal position this year, along with the rising sign and planets for that precise moment.
What a solar return is
A solar return is the exact moment, once a year, when the Sun reaches the same degree and minute of the zodiac it occupied when you were born. From the chart cast for that instant, astrological tradition reads the tone of the year ahead: which houses and planets stand out most until the Sun returns again.
It is not a closed prediction or a guaranteed forecast. It is simply another chart, calculated from the same ephemeris data as your birth chart, that some people use as a symbolic marker around their birthday.
Why it doesn't always fall on your birthday
The tropical year, the time the Sun takes to return to the same zodiac point, does not last exactly 365 days: it lasts about 365 days, 5 hours and 49 minutes. That extra chunk of nearly six hours builds up year after year, so the exact moment of your solar return drifts a few hours later each year until a leap year resets it.
That is why the exact moment can fall the day before or the day after your birthday, depending on the time zone you were born in, though it almost always lands within 24 hours of your actual birthday.
Which location it uses
This calculator places the solar return at your birthplace, using its coordinates and time zone, following the most widely used school of thought. It is the same geographic reference we use for your birth chart, which lets you compare both charts consistently.
There is another approach, the "relocated" or "voluntary" solar return, which casts the chart for wherever you physically are on that day, not where you were born. Changing location shifts the rising sign and the houses for the year, even though the Sun stays at the same point. This calculator does not use that method: it always uses your birthplace.
How to read the result
You'll see the exact date and time of the Sun's return, the rising sign for that instant, and the position of all ten planets at that moment. The solar return rising sign is usually read as the general tone of the year; planets falling in house 1 or close to the ascendant tend to be treated as the most prominent.
Compare this chart with your birth chart by checking which natal house the solar return planets fall into: that combination, more than any single data point, is what gives the year reading its symbolic sense.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need my birth time to calculate a solar return?
Yes. Without a birth time we cannot fix the rising sign or houses of your birth chart, and without those exact figures the solar return rising sign cannot be calculated reliably either. The Sun itself can be placed from the date alone.
Why doesn't the result land exactly at midnight on my birthday?
Because the tropical year lasts a bit more than 365 days, about 365 days and nearly 6 hours. That gap builds up and shifts the exact moment a few hours later each year, sometimes landing the day before or after depending on your time zone.
Can I calculate a solar return for a past year?
Yes, you can pick any year, past or future, and we calculate the exact moment the Sun reached, or will reach, your natal degree that year, using the ephemeris data for that specific date.
How is this different from a regular birth chart?
Your birth chart is cast for the moment you were born and never changes. The solar return is recast every year for the moment the Sun returns to your natal position, so it changes from one birthday to the next.
Does this calculator replace a solar return reading?
No. It gives you the exact data: the moment, the rising sign and the planets. The paid reading is text generated by AI that interprets that data alongside your birth chart and explains which areas stand out most that year.
