Rising Sign Calculator

Enter your birth date, time and place and we calculate your rising sign from real ephemeris data, not rounded tables. Without an exact time, the result is not reliable.

From your birth certificate, local time.
Best with the country: “Rosario, Argentina”.

What the rising sign is

Your rising sign, or ascendant, is the zodiac sign that was coming up over the eastern horizon at the exact moment and place you were born. It marks the start of house 1 in your birth chart and describes how you come across to others: first impression, manner, tone, the face you show before people know you properly.

Unlike your sun sign, which only depends on the day of the year, the rising sign also depends on time and place. Two people born on the same day, at the same time, in different cities, can end up with different rising signs if they are in different time zones or latitudes.

Why the exact time matters

The rising sign moves through all twelve signs in 24 hours, so on average it changes every two hours. That average is misleading, though: near the equator every sign takes a similar amount of time to rise, while at higher latitudes some signs cross the horizon in under an hour and others take more than three. This is called oblique ascension, and it depends on how the zodiac tilts against your local horizon.

A ten or fifteen minute error in birth time can be enough to shift the sign if you were born close to a change. That is why we ask for the time on your birth certificate, not a rough family memory.

What we ask for and what we do with it

We need your birth date, time and city. We look up the city with OpenStreetMap to fix the exact latitude and longitude, and we work out which time zone and which clock rule, daylight saving or standard, applied on that specific day in that place, not the current one.

With those coordinates and the time converted to universal time, the Moshier ephemeris, the same calculation family used by astronomy software and checked against Jean Meeus's formulas, locates the horizon and returns the exact degree of your ascendant. We do not use this data for anything beyond this calculation.

Sun, Moon and rising sign: the "big three"

Western astrology talks about a chart's "big three": the Sun, your familiar horoscope sign and core drive; the Moon, how you handle emotions, which moves into a new sign roughly every two and a half days; and the rising sign, how you come across when people meet you. Together they give a fuller picture than the sun sign alone.

The rising sign is the only one of the three you cannot work out without a birth time. Sun and Moon can be placed from the date alone, though pinning the Moon down to an exact degree also benefits from knowing the precise time.

If you don't know your birth time

Without an exact time, this calculator cannot give you a reliable rising sign: a gap of even a couple of hours can change the result. Start by requesting your full birth certificate from the civil registry, which usually records the time.

If you genuinely cannot recover it, you can still work out your Sun and Moon from the date alone, and leave the rising sign for when you have the data. Do not guess it: a rising sign calculated from an approximate time is not a real one.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need the exact time, or is an estimate fine?

An estimate gives you a rough idea, but the rising sign changes every two hours on average, and much faster at some latitudes. An approximate time can produce a different sign from the real one. For a reliable result, use the time on your full birth certificate.

What if I was born during daylight saving time?

We account for it. We work out which time zone and which clock rule, daylight saving or standard, was in force on that exact day in your birth city, not the current one, because the rules have changed more than once in many countries over the decades.

Why do you ask for my city and not just my country?

Because the rising sign depends on exact latitude and longitude, not just the time zone. We look up your city with OpenStreetMap to fix those coordinates precisely; a neighbouring city a few kilometres away can give a different result if you were born near a sign change.

Does this calculator replace a birth chart reading?

No. It gives you one free, concrete piece of data: your rising sign. The birth chart reading is text generated by AI from all your planets and houses, with interpretation across areas of your life, not just the rising sign.

Can I calculate someone else's rising sign?

Yes, with their birth date, time and place, just like your own. Keep in mind it is personal data: ask before calculating or sharing someone else's rising sign with other people.
