Déjà vu and past lives: is it a soul memory?
Science has an explanation for déjà vu. Spirituality has a very different one. Neither is incompatible with the real experience of whoever feels it, but one of them opens questions the other cannot answer.
What déjà vu is and what science says about it
Déjà vu is the intense, momentary sensation that what you are experiencing right now has already happened before, even when you rationally know it could not have. It occurs most frequently between the ages of 15 and 25 and decreases with age. Neuroscience attributes it mainly to memory processing errors: the brain processes a new experience through two different pathways with a fraction of a second between them, creating the illusion of a memory. It has also been linked to fatigue, stress, and mild dissociative states.
The spiritual explanation: soul memory and previous lives
From a spiritual perspective, déjà vu is interpreted as a moment when soul memory, the memories of previous incarnations, briefly surfaces into present consciousness. The idea is that the soul carries information from all its lives and in specific moments, especially when it reproduces a situation it already lived before, that memory emerges involuntarily. Not as a clear memory but as a resonance, that inexplicable sense of familiarity.
Occasional déjà vu vs. frequent déjà vu: when to pay attention
Having occasional déjà vu is normal and does not require much analysis. But when episodes are frequent, intense, or cluster around certain specific places, people, or situations, it may be worth exploring what is there. Frequent déjà vu around a specific place, for example, may indicate a special connection with that space that goes beyond a previous visit in this life. The same applies to people who produce very intense immediate familiarity from the very first meeting.
Signs your déjà vu may be connected to a past life
Not every déjà vu is a past life memory. But certain patterns distinguish them: déjà vu with unusually high emotional charge, familiarity with places you have never visited in this life, instant recognition of people from the very first moment, or déjà vu accompanied by a very specific emotion that does not match the present context. When déjà vu comes with an emotion that does not fit the current situation, that is what deserves the most attention.
What you can do if déjà vu generates curiosity or unease
If your déjà vu episodes make you curious about a possible past life, exploring that connection through a past lives reading can give a narrative framework to that experience. Not to confirm anything with absolute certainty, but to explore whether there are patterns in your current life that have a through-line with previous soul experiences. Many people find that framework helps them understand bonds, fears, or attractions that have no logical explanation in this incarnation.
